It’s no accident that when you are on a downward spiral – depressed, lethargic, stuck – nothing positive seems to come your way. Here’s why. Because you are responding to your life through the lens of negativity, you are screening out everything positive around you. The opportunity of a lifetime could be staring you in the face, and you would miss it. Such is the power of negative beliefs.
Of course, when you look through the lens of positivity, you generate more success and well-being in your life because you can “see” more opportunities and possibilities. Do you want to live your life through the lens of positivity? One way to do this is by making four agreements with yourself. This approach was introduced by Don Miguel Ruiz, whose knowledge is based on the ancient Toltec traditions of Mexico, in his book The Four Agreements. Basically, an agreement is your belief system – the perceptions you have about yourself, others and the world. Your agreements determine how you act, what you think is possible, how you respond to others, what you tell yourself about your life experiences.
BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Don’t speak negatively about yourself. Avoid gossiping about others. Use the power of your word for truth, encouragement, support and love.
DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do or say is because of you. What others do and say is really about them – how they feel at the moment and what their own needs are. When you avoid taking others’ opinions and actions personally, you stop being a victim to manipulation. You can remain peaceful.
DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
You can create needless drama in your life by making assumptions about others, defending your own assumptions or trying to make someone else wrong based on your assumptions. Instead, ask for clarification in order to gather more information about a situation and to learn how others perceive the situation. Communicate with others as clearly as possible to avoid misunderstandings.
ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Your best is always changing. For example, it will be different when you are healthy or sick, rested or tired. Strive to do your best under any circumstance, and avoid being overly self-critical or self-judgmental.
